Descriptive/Analytical Evaluations’

Learning to taste wine and developing a descriptive analysis () of a particular wine are simultaneous actions. The 3-steps of the wine tasting technique asks us to analyse and describe our observations. As we get to know wine, we are simply discovering and associating.  As we become more experienced, we can use our knowledge and actually perform a more critical analysis.  We can begin to list and characterize the sensations we perceive.  Comparing wines becomes almost automatic.  Norms are established, particularities noted.  Minute details begin to spring forward. Wine descriptions and analytical/critical evaluations take form. This is discovering wine and wine-tasting.

Numerical evaluations take the descriptive evaluations one step further, by putting a more universal language to subjective/objective analysis.  We all understand that a bottle of wine with a vote of 90 is a considered good wine*. 

*I would like to make one note.  Although we try to be objective while wine tasting…everything is relative…each and everyone one of us perceives information slightly differently from the next person, has different preferences, therefore, has a different objectivity.
